But where is the evidence? There should be some.
So far, however, there is no evidence of fire-shattered rock on the Col de la Traversette, although otherwise it fits the ancient descriptions.

I think we may have a case of a guess based upon a guess.

“Hannibal is said to have used” the fire split rock procedure.
But we evidently have no proof of that.

Livy was living at the time of Augustus.


It is quite probable that both of them simply adopted folklore. This is like looking for "Atlantis" because Plato wrote about it.
