Up until the advent of the widespread use of antibiotics less than a century ago, anybody could die from an infection. :(

Life expectancy for a white male in 1880 was 40.5 years. (They didn't even bother tracking women until the 1910 census.)

If I recall, among ancient Romans, life expectancy was something like 28. Not a rapid improvement there.
