Phillip V. Tobias, Who Analyzed Apelike Fossils, Is Dead at

Phillip V. Tobias, a South African paleoanthropologist whose meticulous analyses of fossil remains helped identify extinct species of apelike creatures related to humans, and who boldly spoke out against apartheid, died on Thursday in Johannesburg. He was 86.
