During preparatory work to rebuild the church's ancient spire last month, workers found the well-preserved sarcophagus buried 20 metres (65 feet) underground, lying among the brick pipes of a 19th century heating system.
But it is believed to be much older -- possibly from the 14th century.
Scientists have already peeked into the sarcophagus using an endoscopic camera, revealing the upper part of a skeleton, a pillow of leaves, fabric and as-yet unidentified objects.
Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed.
Other hints that the remains were of somebody of wealth and/or importance is the fact that he/she was buried in a lead coffin, underneath one of the most important cathedrals in Europe. That type of honor was accorded to few. Usually remains found in lead coffins are found to be in a fairly good state of preservation. Maybe some bishop, cardinal or possibly one of the anti popes? I don't remember what time period had the anti popes & I don't care enough to look it up.

They're speculating that the lead coffin could be from the 14th century. Are all the anti popes' resting places accounted for?

Doesn't have to be a pope. Could be some nobleman's illegitimate kid.
