Based on location and timing, it dates from the War of the First Coalition against France.

Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed.

No surprise. It's now been found that Napoleon's army was rotten with typhus etc before he got to Moscow.
