As always it seems when confronted with a mystery archaeologists fall back on 'ritual object.'


The discussion of the geography strikes me as interesting. All examples found north of the Alps. That's where the Celts lived and even the Romans credited them with being superb metal workers. Perhaps the Romans just came along later and also said "what the hell are these things?"

"Ritual object," huh? Does that ever feel like a placeholder explanation? I once lost my car keys for a week, then found them in the freezer. My theory? Ritualistic offering to the ice gods for… colder beer? Probably not. It was just me being scatterbrained. Still, it's more convincing than some archaeological explanations!
