However, if you study the fossils of organisms found in subsequent geological layers, you will see long intervals in which nothing changed ("equilibrium"), "punctuated" by short, revolutionary transitions, in which species became extinct and replaced by wholly new forms. Instead of a slow, continous progression, the evolution of life on Earth seems more like the life of a soldier: long periods of boredom interrupted by rare moments of terror.

That is a good one Beags, and when you think about it, it makes a great deal of sense.

Assuming that when a point of equilibrium is reached the species which are best adapted to that point of equilibrium will flourish. If nothing changes they have no reason to change, either. But introduce some sort of geologic or climatic change into the equation and the species which are best suited to the new conditions will thrive and those that are not will die out.
Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed.

ps

where this comes from is not too long ago i went through the learning curve of being the alpha male in a pack of 7 akitas, rescued from people who didn't want/couldn't handle them. 125 pounds of dogfood a week. and an equal amount of very fast learning. there was this upstart #1 son @ 165 pounds who was doing his best to kill his dad. who was no slouch. still got the bite scars from what was suppposed to be the ultimate challenge between father and son. we agreed to agree, after i got into the fight, literally. i will not mention the state of the living room, afterwards. point being, alpha male goes way, way back, and at a certain point its no joke. humans share this lineage, how, i don't know. but i do know dogs got more sense, in terms of learning how to be a social organization (pack).

so your point is proven, in one particular only.

Females are females. I have a female cat too. The dog has more personality than the cat, but she's definitely female in her moods and actions. The cat's just a kitten so she ain't got much personality yet. One thing about having a female dog, I can tell her "shut up bitch" and it don't offend her. (I do love my dog though) I rescued the cat from the center stripe of the highway on my way home for lunch one day. Someone had thrown her out and her tail got ran over. About a third of it fell off and the stump is having a hard time healing. This has nothing to do with archaeology and I'm sorry about that.

frank, that was funny about your bitch. and i'm glad to hear you rescued the kitten. sounds like she was was lucky to be rescued, and luckier that it was you who rescued her.

i have a male dog who is aggressive as hell, and a female cat who is a lot like my wife.

What Are Dogs?

Dogs lie around all day, sprawled on the most comfortable piece of furniture in the house.
They can hear a package of food opening half a block away, but they don't hear you when you are in the same room.
They growl when they are not happy.
When you want to play, they want to play.
When you want to be alone, they want to play.
They are great at begging.
They will love you forever if you rub their tummies.
They leave their toys everywhere.
They do disgusting things with their mouths and
then try to give you a kiss.

Conclusion: They are little men in fur coats!

What Are Cats?

Cats do what they want.
They rarely listen to you.
They are totally unpredictable.
When you want to play, they want to be alone.
When you want to be alone, they want to play.
They expect you to cater to their every whim.
They are moody.
They leave hair everywhere.
They drive you nuts and cost an arm and a leg.

Conclusion: They are tiny women in fur coats!
