you wrote "exhibiting negroid features" in your original post.
no that was text from the site i linked to with the pictures
i'm not one to find racism everywhere, but denigrating certain features is at least insensitive to those who have those features, even those who don't have them in exaggerated form.
thats exactly the point i was trying to make
if i missed anything sensitive in that statement its only because i see all people as the same despite what shade their skin might happen to be
i loved this benneton advert
i can't believe they banned it

you know what i like about this topic--no one is talking about the subject just racism and prejudice concerning stone heads carved/sculpted 2500 years ago.
again my question is this, are there any ancient documents that shed light on these heads? also i should add, why can't these be artists conceptions or just their gods ?
We mainly have inscriptions from the Olmec. If they ever used something like papyrus or parchment the climate would have disintegrated it ages ago.
Over a decade ago Winters (1979, 1997) deciphered the Olmec writing and discovered that you could read the Olmec inscriptions using the sound value of the Vai signs. The Olmecs spoke an aspect of the Manding (Malinke-Bambara) language spoken in West Africa (Winters, 1979, 1980, 1981,1984).
Scholars have long recognized that the Olmecs engraved many sysmbols or signs on pottery, statuettes, batons/scepters, stelas and bas reliefs that have been recognized as a possible form of writing (Coe, 1965; Gay ,1973; Popenoe and Hatch , 1971 ; Soustelle, 1984). These experts recognized that the system of dots and bars whether associated with gyphs or not, found on Olmec artifacts probably indicated their possession of a system of chronology (Soustelle, 1984). As a result, we find that the Olmec monuments: Altar 7, of LaVenta; Stela no.7 of LaVenta; Monument E at Tres Zapotes; Stela C of Tres Zapotes; and the Tutla statuette are engraved with calendrical information (Morell, 1991; Soustelle, 1984).
Although many Meso-Americanists accept the view that the Olmecs possessed calendrical symbols controversey surrounds the presence of writing among the Olmecs. Wiener (1922) and Lawrence (1961) have maintained that the Olmec writing was identical to the Manding writing used in Africa. Michael Coe and John Justeson on the otherhand beleive that the Olmecs possessed a form of iconography but not writing (Morell, 1991).
(Marduk will doubtless tell us that they were writing in Sumerian.)
Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed.
that website isn't very reliable
did you check the homepage http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Academy/8919/
it quotes Dr Clyde Winters a lot as well.
hes pretty much an afrocentrist, which is ok in itself but you don't find answers when you are looking for the evidence to support a personal belief you already have which is borne out of the social system you live in
I like Clyde though, he's a nice bloke
just a little misguided imo
The issue seems to be whether or not he deciphered Olmec script using that method or not?

if he was correct he'd be a lot more famous right now
using a key to decipher an ancient unknown language requires a lot of interpretation
no one else agrees with his

essentially the mistake Dr Winters is claimed to have made is translating using an african root language is his belief that the majority of the actual Olmec themselves look like that one head and so spoke a basic language similar to the root of that distinct culture from the west coast of africa
you could translate it quite well in any basic language but doing that ignores the mixed languages of the region today which is still settled by the original descendants of the Olmec
Gaelic for instance has over 600 words that are the same in Akkadian, though thats unusual
in a typical 50,000 word language you have normally about 100 words that sound the same and have the same meaning http://members.aol.com/IrishWord/akkad.htm
seeing that the olmec society appeared in full bloom isn't this

a possibility? his belief that is not his mistake.
I don't see any claim that they deciphered anything, marduk.

thats just it
they didn't leave behind many books for that to happen
so attempting to decipher what little there is because you have a personal belief/need that a certain language will fit is not going to work
So....Winters is wrong but no one else can do it either.
Interesting.
