First white baby born in Philadelphia?

Post by gunny »

Having nothing to do with our subject, was reading a book by John McPhee called "Looking For A Ship". This tells the story of one merchant marine cargo ship from New York to the west coast of South America. Their cargo is every thing from shower curtins to iron bars. While in the Panama Canel, their pilot, an Icelander, told a story of him researching in the archives in Iceland that Snorri Thorfinnsson was born, not in Eastern Canada, but on an island in the Delaware River near Philadelphis in June of 1002! He said this adventure was relayed to Pope Benedict VIII who invited them to Rome to tell their story. We know there is evadence of a viking settlement in Eastern Canada, but has anyone heard of this disclosure? McPhees notes are on p.171---less than a paragraph as an afterthought.

claims L'Anse aux Meadows, but it seems unlikely that Vikings would have stayed put up there without sailing around a bit, doesn't it. I've never read where they took their women with them but, if they weren't expecting trouble, I suppose it is certainly possible.

Guðríður gave birth to a son during their stay and they named him Snorri, the first child of European descent to be born in North America, probably around 1004 in L'Anse aux Meadows.

How you doing, gunny?
Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed.

the same goes for me but if they were plannng a settlement, then it would be possible.
