Anthropological studies on the remaining skeleton of a child, found recently wrapped in a white garment in the historic site of Taleb Khan Tepe, revealed the cause of his death to be lack of Vitamin B12.

Announcing this news, Farzad Forouzanfar, director of the Anthropology Department of Iran's Archeology Research Center, said that the child was five years old at the time of death and suffered from severe anemia as a result of Vitamin B12 deficiency.

"The disease is caused by lack of Vitamin B12 which ultimately results in disorder of blood platelet function and decrease of red and white globules," explained Forouzanfar, adding that evidence pointing to the cause of death can still be traced on the child's skull.

It isn't a mystery that people in ancient times died of nutritional deficiencies. Seems interesting that we can pinpoint some of them so well though.

Beags, I believe that living near the Burnt City after its abandonment takes away some of the mystery of vitamin deficiency since the people at Taleb Khan Tepe were likely living on the margin. If the disease was not due to a congenital problem, they were starving. At a minimum, they had no meat in their diet.

Sad but true. As we welcome in a new year in '07 there are still countries in abject poverty, despite any foriegn aid - or in some cases, the lack of it.

There are many examples, but North Korea may be the worse.

Yeah, unfortunately. Against the backdrop of the poverty and the violence of the world, the US and other more wealthy nations like the UK are pretty powerless.

There is poverty, war, and even slavery in Africa. There are not resources to correct all these ills. Whenever and wherever we use our military - we will be criticized.

I could be an islolationist if I would just lose a few IQ points. It sounds so good at times.
