Obviously the development of a large brain was an exceptionally good adaptation culminating in the modern human brain.

I think Freethinker nailed it.
Freethinker, I think you have used a word that separates the discussion.
ADAPTATION. I've seen the word mutation misused many times on many boards.

There is so much misunderstanding of the difference of these words and how they fit into the Darwinian theory, that most people are seemingly confused.

A mutation in ones genetic makeup is akin to hurling a large monkey wrench into an automobile engine and expecting it to run better.

You're right on F/T. I'll keep reading your posts.

I agree Beag that a large brain has proved to be a great adaption. The point I keep making is that a degree of brain enlargement must have occurred before the situation that made it an advantage. Natural Selection works with the tools that are available to it, it does not create those tools.
If no mutation has taken place NS has nothing to work with.

Good Morning Digit! I realize that it's much later in the day for you, but dear wife is making coffee and all that comes with it.

Of course mutation takes place. It's complicated, and I'm being called to breakfast. Digit, I don't have all the answers but I've kept up with those who do on this subject.

I'm covered up 'till next Tuesday, but we can have a long talk about this , if you like. Untill then my posts are a little spotty. When I get a chance I'll pmail you. This is more than just an interesting subject, IMO. Later. 8)
