it looks like half of a horseshoe.

Not in the others, though.

Possibly, but it's round in circumference, versus flat. I'll take a shot that shows that.

It's more like a barb, and the point, though tapered, isn't real sharp, though it could have been before corrosion set in.

The angle at the base seems right for welding up to a central bar.

From what I've gathered on the Internet, a trident is much like what we call a gig in central Texas, for spearfishing. Makes sense, as far as it goes, for a creek, and possibly river environment in the past. The barb makes sense in this context.

Unless it's a bloody big fish a trident is a big clumsy tool, a harpoon is much more handy. The idea of the trident as a fishing tool is another example of the experts never having tried that which they support. As a long term poacher of Trout I tried everything bar a blunt brick!

I've fished with a gig, which is similar to a trident:

They're mainly used, in Texas, for flounder and frogs.

in world mythology the trident is the symbol of gods of the sea
from Enki through to Neptune
now imagine
fishing at sea with a trident
something they're not telling us perhaps
or something we missed

When I first saw it, it reminded my of a rusted out gaff hook like they use to pull fish up out of the water or tie a rope on the end and fling it over a tree branch or wall.

It may be fairly modern.

Yeah, I can't imagine using a gig or trident at sea. Nothing to press against. More of a bottom dweller hunting tool.

A harpoon Marduk must kill quickly or the threshing of the fish or Dolphin etc will free it, that is why modern harpoons use a grenade. The trident maintains a better grasp of the fish. When simple harpoons were used to hunt whales, for example, the whale was normally killed with a special long lance that they used to spear the lungs or heart.

A gaff hook is just that, a hook. It is ment to grab and pull with.
A trident. or gig is more like a 3 headed spear.
Modern ones are not allowed to have much in the way of barbs. You can see how small they are in his photo.
You almost have to use them like you were throwing hay with a pitch fork.
But in the good old days I would expect the use of good sized barbs to keep the fish from slipping off the tines once speared.
