Women's status in ancient history

Post by ravenwing5910 »

I am hoping you all can help me in a bit of research. I am trying to find any recent studies on the roles, status of women in history, especially in the ancient Aegean. If in your own searches you come across an article (preferably from a peer reviewed journal, or reputable site) that addresses this subject, could you please post a link as a reply to this topic? I would truly appreciate any help you can give.

Thanks so much

Hmmm....covers quite a lot of ground there.

I ran the search request Status of Women in the Ancient World through Google Scholar.

I found this right off the bat.

http://books.google.com/books?hl=en&lr= ... ient+World

and then this,

http://books.google.com/books?vid=ISBN0 ... J8#PPP1,M1

These concern themselves with Greco-Roman women which tended to be highly regulated. Perhaps if you were to search for some of the barbarian nations....after all Boudicca led a revolt against the Romans as Queen of the Iceni so there had to be some idea of women having status.

Good luck.
Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed.

Thanks for the links, I will check them out.
to narrow the field perhaps a little, I am most interested in Ancient Aegean pre 5th century BCE (as I already have a lot of information on this period and later). I of course have the classics and the tragedies, as well as texts on the documents of the 5th BCE and the like, lots of male oriented archaeology. What I am having difficulty finding is any new studies that question the current theories of women's status in history. (if there are any).

I have already written several papers on the subject, and wish to continue on the same track through my next year(s), but am running out of material.
again thanks!

Min, I want to thank you again that first link is a bit older but is a book I will want to add to my library. The second. "Women's Life in Greece and Rome" by Lefkowitz & Fant, I already own. It is a good anthology and source book, I refer to it often.

Here's the link for Google Scholar.

It is really quite effective. Good luck.
