i was reading Eduard Neilson's book, 'Oral Tradition' and i came acros this :

What consequences does a reduction to writing involve? What really happens when one makes use of writing? It has too often been asserted from insufficient knowledge of the oral practice within ancient cultures that the reduction to writing involves the first literary treatment of the traditions, the editing and grouping of a formless mass of tradition...Far nearer to the truth are those who claim that a reduction to writing means inthe main only that a tradition in a more or less fortuitous formis fixed on paper."

it got me thinking that there is one other piece of evidence tat supports the biblical record--time. you see, in archaeology, there really is one real copy of the gilgamesh epic, and it was lost and the only reproductins that are available are the copies that have been printed since its discovery. there is a large gap between the original and the copies and there is little evidence, if any, to say that that lone copy is the original and in its original form.

There is nothing to substantiate that that surviving carving is genuine but, once people slap a date on it, that antiquity seems to magically guarentee its infallibility and that it must be truer than the Bible. BUT the Bible has had scrolls and copies of scrollsand copies of scrolls downthrough the ages and it is virtually impossible to find any difference between the verses of antiquity and the modern verses. example:
The larger of the two scrolls was only about three inches long when it was unrolled. The smaller one was just over two inches long. Barkay said the thin fragile silver of each scroll was etched with 19 lines of tiny, Hebrew script. It was years before researchers realized that the inscription was an almost exact representation of the priestly blessing found in Numbers. Careful study revealed that the Hebrew characters used were distinctive of the 7th century B.C.

if the Bible wasn't true, then there would be no reason for such consistency.

Professor Doherty (Jesus Puzzle) points out that there is no consistency at all until the 3'd century.

Prior to that, "christianity" seems to have been a rather haphazard and localized doctrine with no clear concept of itself. That, alone, probably explains why after the christians were legitimized by Constatntine there was such a witch hunt to stamp out 'heretical' beliefs. (Heretical in the sense that after the Council of Nicaea set the agenda anything older that didn't measure up to what the committee wanted was declared 'heretical.'
Committees are always like that, you know. BTW, Jesus wasn't on the committee.) They were remarkably successful in wiping out most traces of what early christians thought but thanks to the Nag Hammadi codices some of the wildly disparate thought of the early christian era has been preserved.
Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed.

To quote a local bumper sticker:

"God so loved the world he DID NOT appoint a committee."

actually consensus was in the first century but just like today, there were those who abused the faith for their own purposes.
Interesting shit. What a con game the entire thing is.
the only con game that is going on is what you are doing to yourself. closed reading list, pre-determined judgments and so on. you are just fooling yourself

I'd suggest that you read Doherty's book but what would be the point? You'd probably have a cerebral hemorrhage on page 2.

"the same non-believing manipulation"

And that differs from believing manipulation, how?

The church has been brain-washing believers for years, and the poor people have no idea of what happened to them.

At the risk of introducing 'science' into what has become an essentially pointless theological discussion....as all such discussions are... the good people at the US Geological Survey have estimated that if all of the ice at the poles melted it would raise sea level by 215 feet...give or take.

http://www.usatoday.com/weather/resourc ... -ice_x.htm

Q: How much would sea level rise if the ice at both poles melted?

A science camp on the Beardmore Glacier, Antarctica. Miles-deep ice covers most of Antarctica.
By Kristan Hutchison, National Science Foundation

A: Scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey estimate that If all of the ice sitting on land in Greenland and Antarctica melted it would cause global sea levels to rise by about 215 feet, or about 65 meters.

As that would be well below the levels needed to cover all dry land I assume this means that the godless commies at the USGS are deliberately trying to bad mouth god and his gang.

Arguing with a follower of Levantine scripture is like arguing with a neurotic about his neurosis. He just dont get it. Such vehement assertions are over the top because we know the psychological pressure needed to keep a lid on it. My heart goes out to them. As Spinoza said, having once accepted a position in youth before being well educated, they maintain their error with great inginuity.

Its a matter of ego. It is, after all, *his* faith that he wants you to adopt. Leaving any ambiguity in it, such as a rational sentient being would, is out of the question. Freud noted it was a chronic condition, and often used to get attention. Of course, the immature need a lot of attention.

Speaking of Bush....interesting footage today of him being briefed on the expected landfall of hurricane Katrina and his resolute decision to do nothing about it.

no one said it came from the polar caps but it is normal for those who do not believe to look for solutions in all the wrong places or to use their limited understanding when looking for proof. someone says it can't be done and you automatically believe them.
