Old Magic

The Old World is a reference to those parts of Earth known to Europeans before the voyages of Christopher Columbus; it includes Europe, Asia and Africa.

"Over the last 30 years I've been quick to dismiss ritual as an explanation for unusual archaeological finds," says Wood. "It usually means that the archaeologists can't think of anything better. So now it seems especially ironic that I end up with a site absolutely full of ritual."

I reckon they’re trying to tell her something.

I expect Min will be next!

Oh, I don't object when someone comes up with actual evidence of religious/ritualistic practices. We know they happened in virtually every culture ever discovered....we still do it today.

It's when they take everything that can't be pigeon-holed into an obvious category and declare that it must be "ritualistic" that I get annoyed with archaeologists. It's just too easy a cop out answer.
Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed.

All -

"New" magic is an oxymoron.

Consider the implications.

"Old" magic is

Worldwide

Cohesive in awareness, intent, and application

i.e., Shamanic

Goes back at least 500k years, if not more

And is utterly divorced from

Politics, Power, Economics

We do not choose the magic.

It chooses us.

"The Sorcerer's Apprentice" is a fine

Metaphor for the reverse polarity

Of those who think they can

Choose their magic

To improve their mortal state.

I guess how you define “old” or “new” is a matter of personal perspective.
At 6000 years I would consider the pool “old”
And kind of neat to have in your back yard.
I do sometimes envy the Brits for the amount of old stuff they can find while out for a walk.

Cognito -

From Mr. Zimmerman, once agin:

Absolutely Sweet Marie

"Well, your railroad gate, you know I just can't jump it
Sometimes it gets so hard, you see
I'm just sitting here beating on my trumpet
With all these promises you left for me
But where are you tonight, sweet Marie?
Well, I waited for you when I was half sick
Yes, I waited for you when you hated me
Well, I waited for you inside of the frozen traffic
When you knew I had some other place to be
Now, where are you tonight, sweet Marie?
Well, anybody can be just like me, obviously
But then, now again, not too many can be like you, fortunately.
Well, six white horses that you did promise
Were fin'lly delivered down to the penitentiary
But to live outside the law, you must be honest
I know you always say that you agree
But where are you tonight, sweet Marie?
Well, I don't know how it happened
But the river-boat captain, he knows my fate
But ev'rybody else, even yourself
They're just gonna have to wait.
Well, I got the fever down in my pockets
The Persian drunkard, he follows me
Yes, I can take him to your house but I can't unlock it
You see, you forgot to leave me with the key
Oh, where are you tonight, sweet Marie?
Now, I been in jail when all my mail showed
That a man can't give his address out to bad company
And now I stand here lookin' at your yellow railroad
In the ruins of your balcony
Wond'ring where you are tonight, sweet Marie."

Well now, we have ourselves a baseline ethical concept here.........

"But to live outside the law, you must be honest"

Which reverses right back to the Shamanic,

- In which there was no law -

Only personal, individual honesty and perception

Shared in a communal awareness

Which spanned tens of thousands of years.

Consider, in depth, the implications of this statement

With regard to the imposed "conditions" of

Politics. Power. Economics. Religion.

Think of this, at present

As a feather balanced on a razorblade.

Push come to shove,

I'll go down - or not -

Fighting

The ring of the heels of jackboots on the streets,

Whether they are jackboots of the mind

Or jackboots of the gun,

Or both, which, historically

They usually are.

You know John,
When people get too lazy to decide for themselves what is right or wrong,
not just for them as individuals,
but for the community in general, is when they ask for laws.
And as soon as you have laws, you get lawyers.
As someone smart said, “You get what you deserve.”
