The tribe had white skin and blonde hair - features which intrigue historians, as there is no known European ancestry in the region, where most inhabitants are darker skinned.

Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed.

This Daily Mail must be some sort of Briddish tabloid-at least it reads like one.
"an ancient, white-skinned civilisation ", "The tribe had white skin and blonde hair ", doesn't square with "Chachapoyas chronicler Pedro Cieza de Leon wrote of the tribe: They are the whitest and most handsome of all the people that I have seen".
Fair means something different to people in countries where everyone, and I mean everyone has brown skin and black hair.
Modern day Peru now has a few natural blondes and redheads but there's no proof on any kind that the Chachapoyas were any thing but indigenous stock.

The real news is that this is more evidence that the Amazon basin was well inhabited from the mouth the head waters.
Is not now a “pristine, original, wilderness” that needs to be protected from being developed by man.
It was very developed prior the European arrival.
The current rain forest “wilderness” is only hundreds of years old, not thousands.
Although that is an interesting side note.
