levallois in the United States

Hang on Folks! Changes are a comin. The july 17th edition of a small Tennessee newspaper published an article about levallois artifacts being found on a rural family farm in Decatur county TN. A dig will begin in the next two weeks led by Dr. John Broster of the U. of TN who has 43 years experience with old world lithic technology. the farm is a known clovis site and has all the resources necessary for long term early man habitation, tool stone, water , wildlife. Dr. Broster has visited the site several times and hopes to find datable materials in secure contexts to validate the artifacts. I don't have a link to the article as It was sent to me by the landowner and finder of the artifacts in a personal email. The paper is The News Leader and the reporter was Danny Haynes. I have seen some of the stone tools and they appear to be the same technology I have found here in Indiana as well as that found recently in ala, fla, and ga. The difference being that the TN find is supposed to be able to yield secure stratigraphic evidence and undisturbed context suitable for accurate dating.

I couldn't find a link to that story, either, however, I did find a .pdf file co-authored by Professor Broster.

Although I can't find a date on the report itself, he has a chart of the location of fluted points found in the continental US and that chart bears a date of 2005.

Of significance is this line from the conclusion:

In summary, the archaeology of Tennessee has the potential to explore many
continental and regional scale questions. The dense numbers of Paleoindian bifaces, as
well as the presence of a potentially pre-Clovis date at the Johnson site, have implications
for the colonization of the Americas.
