Baskets, gourds, bladders, maybe even rawhide satchels all came before pottery.

In an area away from the tropics, ie, with seasonal variations in food supply, I would have thought that food storage was essential. I can see the summer and Fall months used as time away from base gathering to be used during the winter, with hunting as a suppliment.
I think we are in danger of confusing HGs with nomads.
