What comes through to me is the fact that recognition and dignity has been extended to the dead.

if the man in Burial 101 was a slave, “it would have been his master’s decision to pay extra for the tacks on his lid.”
And if he had been one of the numerous free blacks in places like NYC, his own family would have come up with the cost of it.
a remarkable example of the survival of African customs in the face of violent subjugation in early America.
Inconvenient facts such as that there were more black slave owners than white slave owners in one county in Virginia in the 1860 Federal Census, and that their ancestors had been captured and sold into slavery by their own fellow blacks are conveniently omitted. As is that their monetary value was such that particularly onerous or dangerous work was contracted to poor whites.

I'm with KBS on this one. Uncle Tom's Cabin is past old by now.

black slave owners than white slave owners in one county in Virginia in the 1860 Federal Census,
I wish you could get our loony left wingers to accept that!
Plus the fact that our, (white) ancestors purchased the slaves from other blacks in Africa and from Arab traders.

I believe that a black slaves to black owners, and I suppose Arab owners, slave trade is still a big business in central Africa.

American Indians captured and enslaved each other.
Ancient Jews enslaved each other.
Slaves in the Roman Empire came from all over the world.
Same with the Chinesse and the Egyptians.

Slavery has never been a racial thing.
It is an economic thing.
It is and was worldwide.

According to the British Anti Slavery Society there are currently more people enslaved then at any time in history.
It seems to be cultural as well as economic as the major players are in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

Unless you consider just the sex slave trade, then the US is far and away the #1 importer.

What makes you think Americans screw any more than other nations? I think you're confusing it with Americans getting screwed royally by the movers and shakers (just look at the running away trillions of national debt that will enslave Americans for centuries to come to the moneylenders).

I read an article a while back that stated the institution of slavery is driven by a lack of a source of cheap labor.
(such as in the colonization of the New World)
It seems that slavery is economically feasible only when there are no laborers otherwise available.
(I believe the author meant only agricultural labor type slavery and not sexual slavery)

That, I think, would depend on what they mean by 'available'.
Saudi Arabia has an unemployment rate in excess of 90 per cent, simply 'cos they consider manual labour beneath them and the state supports them in their idleness.
They also have one of the largest percentage of university students, the majority of whom study Islam.
They also have a shocking record on human rights abuse and slavery.
Their version of Islam, unlike the other sects, does not disagree with slavery.

Sorry RS, i don't have a link for you, but it was a recent study (last 2-3 years) that showed that more people who are kidnapped and forced into sexual slavery are brought to the US than to any other country.
