Best Minor for an Anthropology Major?

Here's where you get off topic and off center....Keep it nice, keep it clean, no sniping, no flaming. After that, anything goes.

Best Minor for an Anthropology Major?

Post by paleochick »

I was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on a minor for an Anthropology major?

Your education system is somewhat different to ours of course, but I would have thought that any minors you took would be appropriate to which part of anthroplogy you were most interested in.
My equivalent to you Major was in electrical engineering, and it was extremely broad, such that some parts of it I have never used even 50 yrs later, and I assume that an Anthropology Major would also be of a broad spectrum with a minor more specific to your main interests.

That's the problem, I have the option to take a "fallout" minor such as Education as a security net for employment, but I am really aiming for Physical Ant or Archaeology. I am leaning more towards the security net for employment reasons, but I am wondering that in the long run, as for employment as an archaeologist, would an Ed. minor affect my chances?

That's a question I cannot answer, obviusly an education qualification is a useful fallback, but how it would effect your other ambitions I cannot say as I am UK based and the employment market is probably a lot different.
Here in the UK what you call a Major we grade, I think, thus a good grade plus the Ed Minor would probably score higher to any employer than a lower grade plus a better Minor.
Horses for courses.
The only other point I can make is that because of my qualifications I was able to pick and choose my employers, thus only once did I end up in job I disliked, briefly, and I've always felt very sorry for those performing some task they loathed.

Thank you for the input, I do find it helpful. I know I need to make a decision by the end of this fall. I suppose I could just watch the employent ads for anthropology and see what employers are asking for requirement wise. TY again.

With what they pay teachers you'd be better off with something else. Get a Master's in something and you can teach at a community college where at least you won't have politicians blaming you for the fact that kids would rather play video games or tweet than do their homework.
Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed.

LOL Minimalist! I looked at the pay scale for my county and I would probably be started around 37, 000 a year (if I were lucky). This is a such a hard choice.

And TY Michelle, I will check out those links maybe they will steer me in the right direction.

My decision was simple. Go for what you enjoy, sod the money, it's unlikely to buy you as much pleasure as a job that's enjoyable.

Just call me "Min," dear. Everyone else does.

You guys are both right, I think I will throw the Ed. minor to the way side for now. I sure know my passion is not in teaching, It was just something one of the professors from the education department had mentioned to me. I'll probably shoot for biology. TY guys!
