If anything they should be (re-)absorbed by the navy, which is where they originated after all. In fact the Dutch Marines – the concept that inspired the US Marines – have been part of the (Dutch) navy for 335 years and never were separate. That's a strictly American invention.

Prince Bernhard received a $1.1 million bribe from Lockheed to ensure the Lockheed F-104 would win out over the Mirage 5 for the purchase contract.
