I still remember my eighth grade science teacher, during the Earth Sciences part of the curriculum, bring in a dozen oranges and passing them around the class.
After we had all examined them he proceeded to tell us that, in scale, the distance for the lowest spot in the ocean to the top of Mt Everest was les than the distance from the bottom of one of the grooves on the orange skin to the top of one of the ridges.
His point was that the Earth is smoother than an orange.
I wish Al Gore had him as a teacher.
