Rock Painting Egyptian Style

The Old World is a reference to those parts of Earth known to Europeans before the voyages of Christopher Columbus; it includes Europe, Asia and Africa.

Rock Painting Egyptian Style

Post by Minimalist »

I actually picked this up from Arch's board. It wasn't so long ago that we had a discussion about the lack of cave art of animals in North Africa to serve as a precursor to the cave paintings in Europe. Perhaps, the flow went south instead of north.

A Canadian archeologist is being credited nearly 50 years after the fact with discovering a prehistoric petroglyph site in southern Egypt that is now being described as a "Lascaux on the Nile" because of its similarity in age and style to France's world famous, cave-wall gallery of Stone Age cattle, deer and horses.
Prehistoric petroglyph site in southern Egypt discovered by Canadian archeologist Philip Smith in a 1962-63 expedition.
The inscribed Egyptian images of extinct wild oxen, hippopotami, fish, gazelle and other animals - now firmly dated to a time in the late Pleistocene era at least 15,000 years ago - are being hailed as the oldest rock art in North Africa and as a pivotal discovery in the evolution of artistic behaviour by ancient humans.
15,000 year old images in Africa v 25-35,000 years at Altamira. Maybe the Neanderthals gave HSS the artistic gene and took it back to Africa to renovate the "motherland?"
Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed.

Not that unusual kb, Gregor Mendel's notes were lost for many years, the site of the T Rex bone yard in NA was lost for many years, some of King Tuts grave goods turned later having been kept by Carter.

Total heresy! Min, you damn well know that prior to 10,000bce people were only allowed to migrate in one direction and one direction only ... that's why it's called "Out of Africa", not "Into Africa". Get back on board the bus, please!

Image

Notes to above:

(1) As a corollary, people were only allowed migratory passes into the Americas from Asia. Return trips were forbidden.
(2) Migrating from Europe to the Americas was simply out of the question.

Our old friend Ish has a real strong anti-Hawass rant on her new site about the 50 year delay.
She admits some personal involvement and that it has a conspiracy tone.
But it is a good read.

Somehow I doubt Hawass had anything to do with it, it was never hidden, the reports were still with the university, Smith would still have had his notes.
The dating comment is a bit lax....

In 2008, scientists utilizing Uranium-thorium dating estimate parts of the artworks are between 25,000 and 35,000 years old

....for Altamira.

How many decades did it take them to publish the Dead Sea Scrolls? Sometimes scholars simply like to be overly careful.

Well, I guess I don’t have a dog in this fight.

While it does seem that pre “Egyptian” sites in Egypt have been a bit ignored by the powers that be in Egypt they must have issued permits, etc.

I am just glad this data is out there now.
It shows how much the physical world has changed.

Wendorf and Schild have been active in this field since the mid-70's.

Graham Hancock made a lot about the stone farming implements they found and dated to the 11th millenium BC.

There has been rock art in Australia which has been dated to 40,000 years ago. So we could plausibly extend back the beginnings of symbolic thought in humans further than the 50,000 years ago. I would not be surprised if symbolic thought goes back more than 100,000 years, maybe 200,000 years. It is likely whatever evidence for symbolic thought back then has not survived or is yet to be discovered.

As far as I can see symbolic thought reaches back to the time when someone struck two stones together with the intentions of producing a predetermined shape.

Graham Hancock is, at best, a twit.
If I heard him say that it is light outside, I would look out a window to see it it were true.
