Just as with UFO's, There are many people who desperately want to believe in this.
Just as with UFO's, there are any number of con men and psychopaths willing to provide them with "data"
on which to base their beliefs.

Given the past history of this, when anyone stumbles in proclaiming their innocence and lack of bias, it automatically raises one's suspicions.

Let us assume the most likely hypothesis, that this stone a forgery.
It would have been manufactured after the Kensington Stone was publicized,
as it used the same characters.

Why would it have been forged?
Perhaps to interest someone into buying a nearby property.
(It is clear that shawomet never talked to the Mellons. Wasn't there an "ancient" map donated to Yale as well?)

I need to add here that the number of frauds makes it very difficult to work with early trans-Atlantic materials.

Since the stone was on land originally, I would assume that title to the stone was with the land owner at that time.

Based on past experience, it is more likely that you have uncovered another chapter in the long history of US archaeological frauds.

But then you did not bother to do minimal research into that possibility.

Correct, and that has been the case for decades. There was never any question of the ownership.

I do not specialize in R.I. property law.
Nor in R.I. slander law.
Aside from that, whether a forgery or real, the object is not all that important on the cosmic scale of things.

What is clear to me is that you never spoke with the Mellon family or anyone alied with them.
What that indicates to me is really deficient field technique.

From what you have said here, you also made no search of Native history.

There are ways other than tool marks to date manufacture.
Someday you'll think of them.

May I suggest to you that you look at the very first European contact reports with the native residents of the area?

That is to say ones before the plagues hit.

I think that if you want to learn the history of European contacts in the area, what you need to find are the papers relating to Tisquntum:

The English would have tried to learn from their prisoner:
1) His peoples' language
2) Their strength, forts, villages, as well as those of their neighbors
3) Their history, including their relations with their neighbors

We seem to have historical (after the English) evidence that the stone existed.
We don’t seem have, until relatively lately, any attempt as to what it said.

Have you checked the property records to find out who owned the plot before the Mellon's?
Tried to track down any of that family's descendants for their memories?
