kb, there is an abundant documentation of Norse trade with Byzantium.
There is also documentation of an open Artic Ocean north of Russia during medieval times.

Since I was in grade school I thought the historical divide between Europe and Asia was the Ural mountains.
It turns out I was wrong.
Until the Soviets drained it for farming there was a marsh that ranged from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea.
The Valdais Hills are the headwaters of both the north flowing Volkhov, Daugava rivers and the south flowing Dnieper, Volga rivers.
There were very few east to west crossing points, but the marsh provided shallow draft boat traffic north to south from the Baltic to the Black Sea.
It was a great route if you were going south to sell white furs or blond women and returning north with gold and jewels.
How far south did those Siberian rivers flow?
Far enough to pick up copper carrying overland traders?
Copper for Ermine maybe?
