Ah! If I may make a suggestion then ... type it up in Word and then copy and paste it into the text box here or at whatever forum you're using. They all glitch out sometimes. Not only do you still have your text if the forum glitches but (and I love this) Word spell checks for you! Oh happy days!Frank Harrist wrote:You know what I really hate? SHIT! Well I ain't typing it again.

I can't open PDFs here.alrom wrote:Hahahaha ok Frank, I just re-read your post and I think I didn't quite get it this time.Frank Harrist wrote:Oh and BTW, just call me Frank.![]()
I understand that you're trying to use stones as counterweights in order to make it easier to move other stones up a ramp, and at the same time, use the counterweight stones as construction material in the lower parts of half a pyramid. You move one stone up, tie it to a rope through a pulley, then move it down to its place which is on the other half of the pyramid while at the same time you're pulling another stone block up the ramp. Repeat until the pyramid is finished.
Is that right?
BTW why is a ramp needed? couldn't they just move the blocks up the pyramid one step at a time? are the stones too heavy for this?
Have you heard of this theory? http://www-personal.umich.edu/~imladjov/Mladjov.pdf
I don't have "Word" on this computer. I thought of using notepad, but my great post is still gone and my mind has moved on to other things now. I can't remember everything I wrote. I'm at work and there are some distractions. Maybe I'll be inspired again later. Right now I'm just a little miffed.Katherine Reece wrote:Ah! Lehner experimented with different methods of moving stones up on level at a time on "This Old Pyramid" (which I know some have poo pooed here but they apparently didn't watch the show themselves.. it was really quite good)... most of the levering methods that had been thought of at the time were too unstable.BTW why is a ramp needed? couldn't they just move the blocks up the pyramid one step at a time? are the stones too heavy for this?
I'd like to see the experiments repeated with Wally Wallington's method. I have his DVD and to me it looks quite good.

I sympathize, Frank. It's happened to me, too. Generally, if I am making a long post, I select the text and copy it before hitting the submit button. That way, if it does crash, all you have to do is get back to the reply site and hit control+v.
Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed.

We invite people from other sites to this each year so I thought I'd give y'all a heads up and some background.
The Heb Sed is a festival celebrated by the ancient Egyptians periodically during the reign of a Pharaoh. It was a rejuvenation ceremony. At Ma’at we’ve adopted the name for our anniversary parties. Those familiar with Ma’at know how these parties are planned, but since y’all don’t I don’t want you to be at a disadvantage if you wish to come and participate.
Our anniversary is July 21st. We have an Internet Scavenger Hunt, the winner of which gets the grand prize book (you’re given a selection of books to choose from). I’ll post the directives for the scavenger hunt about a week before the actual party so people have time to work on it and I have time to judge it, and it doesn’t interfere with the party itself and the participants in the scavenger hunt aren't kept from the other activities. During the day we have quizzes onboard, people are of course free to keep another browser window open and try to google the answers, but you have to be quick! The winners of the regular quizzes are given a list of books from which to choose their prize. There are quizzes on multiple boards (we have a history board, science board, popular media board, sociology board, and a chat board, and quizzes are placed according to the board. For example this year we’ll have a Doctor Who trivia quiz on the popular media board. We give people ten minute notification for quizzes so people have a chance to get prepared.
We also for this day bring back our original logo with a bit of a twist. Our original logo was the weighing of the heart ceremony which takes place in the hall of Ma’at. The characters from the logo dress up and tell some truly horrible jokes. It uses flash, you’ll see last years flash on the top of this year’s invitation (turn up your speakers and click away).
So! All that background said! Here’s your invite!

I’ll post a final update to the invitation about a week before the Sed along with the scavenger hunt instructions.

Do we have to wear loin cloths or anything?

My dear, if I was pharoah, I'd never leave the harem!

Frank, I don't quite understand your pulley/counterweight idea.
I have the same instinct as Mini, that you would be undoing your work with each new stone.
One of the interesting examples (if true) about how the Egyptians thought and worked is how they loaded an (reclining) obelisk on a barge. FIrst they dug a canal up to and under the obelisk. THen they weighted the huge barge down
with stones twice as heavy as the obelisk. THen they moved the barge up under the obelisk, and slowly moved the stones until the barge floated up and lifted the obelisk off the ground.
THis came from a great url with lots of pictures that katherine posted yesterday:

One wonders how they moved a sunken barge loaded with heavy stones?
