Do you realize that is the same viewpoint of archaeologist when confronted with . . . say . . . a fact? That may seem unfair, but the rules of evidence, scholarship, skepticism, all of that hold for all. Just as he ignores 350 years of biblical scholarship, you are essentiall doing the same thing. Why?

and whose

ox is gored,

now?

internal consistency is a lousy excuse for historical accuracy.

look at the bible.

paul is "different" how?

who said paul could write?

my understanding of those days is that writing was generally undertaken, at a price, by professional scribes.

much like today.

Some guy wrote Humpty Dumpty, too. So what?
False analogy.

I am starting to get the impression that we are talking about two different things, Doc.
Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed.

My point is that lots of people write fiction. Just because it can be proved that they wrote it does not make in non-fiction.

I'm not sure where we went off the track with this.

dang.

had to go back to my early third century edition of "Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management."

and there........i found this.........

"if an ox gores a man or a woman to death then the ox shall surely be stoned, and its flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox shall be acquitted. But if the ox tended to thrust with its horns in times past, and it has been made known to its owner and he has not kept it confined, so that it has killed a man or a woman, the ox shall be stoned and its owner shall also be put to death. if there is imposed on him a sum of money, then he shall pay to redeem his life, whatever is imposed upon him. whether it has gored a son or gored a daughter, according to this judgement, it shall be done to him. if the ox gores a male or female servant, he shall give to their master thirty shekels of silver, and the ox shall be stoned."

Then, a corroborating account from Martin Luther (1483-1546) -

"it makes a difference whose ox is gored."

Works (1854 ed.), vol LXII

all in perfectly good english.

And a lot of people wrote letters. A lot of them contained factual information. Some contained factual information and embelishments.

People lie too, for lots of reasons.

Frankly, when you stumbled over the possibility that a historical figure may have existed.

As I said somewhere else, it will take a lot more than an ambiguous reference to an assumed brother to breathe some life into that story.

One word in one line of text.

I just cannot get excited about it.
