I joined the NRA when they decided to blame the gun manufacture's for the stupidity of gun owners who leave loaded guns laying around and their claim that if you don't make guns, criminals wouldn't be able to get them. Luckily all that came out of that was forcing the makers to supply a trigger gaurd on hand guns. Generally I disagree with most of their propaganda.
It was pretty sad when police were issued 38 specials and the criminals were using UZI's and Colt 45's. The NRA had big role in changing that. It's similar to what Bush is doing in Iraq. Tell the military to go packing and then try to recruit a new army to fight the old one, who probaly took all the weapons, without arming them. Training isn't going to help, they need guns, hummers, tanks, money to pay these guy's to fight. The insurgents are the old army, the ones who wanted a military career. It's sad to see our military riding around in cadillacs and the iraqi's in toyota's with unreliable soviet guns. I'd be pissed off too.
If we have the right to bear arms I feel it should be a mandotory that all kids get hunter safety classes. If you teach them what it's all about, gun safety, a lot of accidents wouldn't happen.
That's my two cents.

Toche---Digit---Min was stressing the children killed by guns. My father at a very young age took me to our back pasture. He set up some plastic milk jugs filled with water. (Touche above) Explained the function of the weapons and the safeties and said if you are your friends want to see these weapons or handle them , just ask me. He then shot the jugs with the explosions showing the danger. We were impressed! The children that shoot themselves and others have families that have no firearms hereitage. I had a .22 rifle, with instructions at age 7. At age 9, an old uncle gave me a 30-40 Krag rifle and had my first deer at age 10. Entering the service fired 232/250 first among the 200 shooters. Not bragging, but the early instruction was the reason. We had shooters that had not fired a BB gun in their life. These are the children who shoot themselves and others.

There are no licensing requirements to become a parent in any state.

Any jackass can do it.

And that usually happens....except that the kid is still dead.

Sadly, that is the case.

As is the case with intoxication manslaughter, wreckless driving, sticking a kid's head underwater until they drown, etc...

I remember, as a kid, one of my uncles, or my dad, smacking the hell out of any of us kids that even came close to pointing a gun at someone else...and pounding into our heads: "empty" guns kill the most people.

Fortunately my son is very safe (he's a worrier), and I haven't to do so with him. I have smacked a few nephews, though...it's a given in our hunting groups...whoever's the closest to a kid being unsafe, wacks the kid up side the head.

My father was a career Anny officer, and I had the privilege of receiving instruction at the marksmanship training unit at Fort Benning.

I will say one thing for you Brits! I had a WWI Enfield 303 and WWI Webley in .455, and never in my extensive experience have I ever shot any firearm truer to the point of aim! Remarkable weapons to be over 90 year old at the time.

My Father taught me as well Bruce, in the hills of southern Indiana. It's some of the fondest memories of my childhood. He was strict though about gun safety. I learned that any tool could be a help or a hazard. I never paid much heed to my Mother when she told me to stop running with a sharp stick because I could put my eye out - but I did my Father.
