He may have come down from the trees, but prehistoric man did not stop swinging. New research into Stone Age humans has argued that, far from having intercourse simply to reproduce, they had sex for fun.
Practices ranging from bondage to group sex, transvestism and the use of sex toys were widespread in primitive societies as a way of building up cultural ties.
According to the study, a 30,000-year-old statue of a naked woman -- the Venus of Willendorf -- and an equally ancient stone phallus found in a German cave, provide the earliest direct evidence that sex was about far more than babies.

Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed.

"Pornography"? Then what IS "pornography", really? Is there a definition that can be applied in practice to determine whether something is pornography or isn't?
I submit there is no agreement on a definition of what constitutes pornography, and what doesn't. Therefore the use of the word pornography is suggestive. And the intention of that suggestion is that pornography is supposed to be 'wrong'. Even 'criminal', if the religious right gets its way. To say the least.
So let's use the word 'sex'. Not 'pornography'!
Sex in archaeology is indeed "as old as the world" (of course). Some religions even put it central to their doctrine. Like this Hindu temple illustrates (Mini's already seen these):

But you need to see it closer-up:

And this is of course what it's all about:

Obviously, Bonobo chimpanzees are much brighter than man: when they disagree, they screw! Instead of making war. And that works! They screw eachother all day everyday to keep the peace in their society.
We should try that too!

Has anyone asked the animals, then?Forum Monk wrote:Some apes appear to engage in strange practices, but lust of imagery seems to be a distinctly human trait.

No, no, no. I am not crimalizing anything and I am not specifically referring to sex in its many variants. I am referring to visual images and the effect they have on the species. I am talking about depictions, i.e. statues, carvings, pictures, paintings, etchings, of imagery, which sexually arouses individuals and its intent is to so. I don't care about the politics or religion of it. Just the science of it.
I made this post last night wondering if the arousal by sexual imagery was a uniquely human characteristic. Then today on CNN there is news about how zoo officials in China are using videos of Pandas having sex to stimulate other male Pandas. Apprarently this is meeting with success either through the visuals or the sound, one of the two. So perhaps its not only humans who are affected by porn.
btw - I can only read this thread from home because our stupid web filter at work sees the word porn or sex more than a few times in conjunction with R/S's jpegs - and pow - the page is blocked.

Panda porn....how quaint.
You know, Hinduism could gain a lot of recruits on college campuses if they would just play up that line of thinking and play down the "sacred cow" stuff.

India's the only country I've been to where the men are more interested in money than they are in sex.Minimalist wrote:Panda porn....how quaint.

Is that a little field test you do in every country you visit, Ishtar? Like, it's your 'contribution to science'...? LOL!Ishtar wrote:India's the only country I've been to where the men are more interested in money than they are in sex.Minimalist wrote:Panda porn....how quaint.

So if you're not aroused by a picture then it's not porn. Good point. But if true then millions of women get aroused by seeing a picture of George Clooney in a tux. I know I do and I'm an old gray mare.Forum Monk wrote:No, no, no. I am not crimalizing anything and I am not specifically referring to sex in its many variants. Of course pron is like beauty, it's all in the mind of the beholder. If you are not offended that's okay, but if it should offend you then it's bad. The Victorians were offended by the works of Michaelangelo and were omitted from tours. Heard the good ladies often fainted from the sight of a male.
Like you I too can read only from home because of the filters at work. Damn banks.

LOL, Leona.
I have a very good friend who went to see The 300 and came back salivating at the Spartans. I had to tell her that the Spartans really did not fight in loin cloths but in Bronze Armor from head to toe.
She was really disappointed.
