Respect

Here's where you get off topic and off center....Keep it nice, keep it clean, no sniping, no flaming. After that, anything goes.

Respect

Post by john »

All -

Several of the threads on this board

Have been disturbing to me in the last few days.

There is a fine line, and,

Sometimes not so fine a line

Between (strongly held) opinion and

Outright personal insult.

Mind you, I am human and

Can and do "Get on my high horse", too,

And usually regret it.

I joined, and try to contribute to this forum

Because of the astonishingly high level of

Dialogue and mutual respect, despite

Our many differences of opinion, which

Are all good as they are the

Lifeblood of dialogue.

Now, if this turns into

A typical "fuck you too" forum,

Baby, I'm gone.

Got bigger fish to fry.

So how 'bout taking a time out, and renewing the discipline

Of mutual respect

Before putting your personal match

In the toucholes of another

Internet broadside.

Yes?

To everyone,

John makes an extremely valid point…..respect.

While I am not here as much I would like/love to be (for personal reasons that I am not compelled to list here), I would hope that the respect that built this board would sustain it.

This has always been an open and free form forum. There are limits but I believe they have been proven to be beyond broad at times.

In this medium, we lose tonal inflection and body language, two key components of communications.

So…..all I am asking is that we each think before we hit ‘submit’. We’ve all forgotten to do this at times, regretted it and spent time apologizing for it.

Anyone at anytime can PM me or e-mail if they see a problem. Each member is, in effect, the eyes and ears that assist Minimalist and me.

Thanks for being apart of this and keep up all the great, at times painfully thought provoking, posts.

I'm really not understanding the sudden concern about disrespect. I assume this is all in reference to the disagreements which have erupted on the australian tools thread.

We have had far worse exchanges in the past and most people never batted an eyelash. I don't get it.

Respect

Post by Cognito »

This forum is unique since we all have the ability to discuss the latest archaeological news and finds without the burden of having to present the requisite diploma to gain an audience. Most people who post here are reasonable and possess common sense, those who don't are weeded out quickly. I enjoy the news that is presented here since it is consolidated and the opinions help assess what is really happening in the sandbox.

The issue of respect and courtesy becomes difficult when affronted by somone, but an antagonistic response creates a negative atmosphere on this board for others to see. John is correct, he doesn't want to sift through the arguing since he has better things to do with his time. I feel the same way, but I am also particularly concerned about those who stand on the outside and watch the bickering. Although we encourage more input here, those people will never post for fear of being attacked in a public forum. :(

Let's try to chill and not be so quick to attack. Easy for me to say, but not always easy for me to do -- I've had my run-ins here also, and regret most everything I've said with the possible exception of Arch.:D

How very true and how very trying it is at times to deter oneself from overreacting.

I've known RS for 2 yrs.. There is no problem...period. I did start to get a little hot under the collar, and I left the forum.

John, I don't know where you've been but there used to be a lot of incivility here; I thought you knew that. I'm sorry you are so easily disturbed.

but there used to be a lot of incivility here

The good old days of Arch and Marduk and...Jean Marie?
Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed.

Beagle -

I have absolute respect for differences of opinion, sometimes significant.

I have no respect minus for the use of incivility

To influence a reasoned argument.

To attempt to influence a reasoned argument

By means of incivility

Or personal attacks, is, in my world

Completely unethical and outside any possible real point

Cogent to the discussion.

So, if that is "easily disturbed", in your world,

So be it.

I enjoy being "easily disturbed".

It keeps my ethical and intellectual senses sharp.

John, John......as recently as March 8 you requested that a brand new poster (Danaan), after only one post, go to another forum. That was pretty rude.

So let's just chill out, eh?

G'night all. :D
