"Through excavation, we are confident that these hematite were deliberately brought to the Xuchang ruins from afar by ancient people, as Xuchang does not produce such minerals," said Li.
And doubtless, John.....they were imported by BOAT!

Hematite was used in the Pleistocene somewhat like duct tape is today - for damn near everything. Paint, glue, tattoo colouring, etc.
The article mistates that
"The Peking Man skull fossil dates back 200,000 to 700,000 years, while the Upper Cave Man skull fossils date back about 18,000 years." The Upper Cave Man skull dates from
80,000 years plus and is obviously a Homo erectus specimen:

Most Chinese anthropologists believe that Asian H. erectus interbred with OOA to create their ancestors. That scenario is not so far-fetched from the nuclear DNA admixture standpoint.

Ah! Obviously they were far more accommodating than HNS in Europe!

Min, do you know Andy Blackard? He recently made a statement on a different forum that H erectus mtDNA was recently disocovered in a population in the Cambodia/Thailand area. I will try to pin down the source from him. Until then, this is in the rumor/speculation category.

The name doesn't ring a bell. But it's an amazing assertion.

Oh I love upset applecarts!
But I have to ask, how would they know that the DNA was from Erectus?
(I also love awkward questions!)

As long as you don't mind getting back an awkward answer!

Akward or not Min I'd love to know how you identify DNA from and extinct species.
Roy.

I'd guess you need to find a skeleton of that species that you can extract DNA from...much as they have done with mammoths. The big kicker is the time frame. HE supposedly went extinct a long time ago.
Unless....they didn't go extinct at all and we are their descendants.
It's a fair question, though.

Quite so. But that wouldn't help prove the case Min. Faced with a Mule and no Asses how do you prove that the the Mule is a Horse X Ass?

Comedians have already admitted that they are going to miss him.

They could start on ours, most of us are past laughing though.
