CONTERFEIT MOCHA WARE

Post by Der Lange »

Hey folk, I have one for those who are really into obscure stuff about 19-century pottery.

There is a variety of British ceramics called "mocha ware." It features some zany patterns created by capillary action on the surface of the pottery. It was apparently quite poplar in the 1800's. The patterns often look like a desert thorn bush.

From a shipwreck in the Near East (as many clues as y'all gonna get), I have an example of that stuff. It is really cheap and cheesy stuff and looks like it was counterfeited product.

I am in a "race" with a colleague to learn about this stuff and prove or dis-prove the hypothesis that this was a knock-off product made somewhere in the Eastern Med. Anyone know who I can contact to check this out?
