You're going to force me to dig up my copy of Doherty, again, aren't you?

He had a lot to say about Paul but, to tell you the truth, I did not find it all that interesting as Doherty seemed to be taking the position that Paul's jesus was a mythical figure, similar to Mithras. I was more interested in the historical references at the time.

Perhaps I have to read it closer?

probably but it would be interesting to hear his side of the debate. i know that antiquities is a booming business as forgeries abound and any unsuspecting tourist is taken but what would the ramifications if the james ossuary turned out to be genuine?

Crazy-ass christians world wide would skin their knees praying to it without stopping to realize that it really has nothing to do with any historical Jesus.

These were all very common names, back then.

There is an online Aramaic-English converter. Had he bothered to check it out he would have found that the word for "on" is the same as the word for "by."

So, a little shabby translating or hopeful editing and a pastoral scene of jesus walking by the water turns into jesus walking on the water.

No great loss, though. Rid the world of one bible-thumper and hopefully his congregation learned a valuable lesson.

gwetting back to archaeology, here are some thoughts from strong and mclintock pg. 205 (i have neglected to put vol. numbers in as it was an oversight):

b. WRITTEN MEMORIALS. The Bible itself stands first in value as the chief
source of Jewish archaeology. Next are the works of Josephus and Philo,
which are of great service; then follow the Talmuds (q.v.), and the Rabbins
(q.v.), whose statements must be used carefully (see Meuschen’s N.T. ex
Talmud illustsr. 1736; Lightfoot, Hor. Hebr. Cantab. 1658; Schottgen,
Hor. Hebr. 1,733-1742; Wetstein, Annot. in N.T. Amst. 1751). To these
may be added notices respecting Egypt, Persia, Judaea, etc., found
occasionally in Greek and Roman writers, especially Herodotus (see
Hupfeld, Exercit. Iterod. 1, 2); next, Xenophon, Diodorus Siculus, Strabo,
Pliny, Plutarch, Tacitus, Justinian, give illustrations of the customs of the
times, particularly useful for the elucidation of the N.T., although they are
very much given to misrepresentation of the Jews.
