I guess I won't be able to make it if I have to pay my own way. I have a lot of field experience, but I'm not a pro. I'm a volunteer. I couldn't leave my dog behind for that long either. I'll loan ya'll my trowels and shovels and screens and any other diggin' stuff you need. I think they should send a few satellites there before the expedition to photograph the entire area with different spectrums, (or whatever) so ya'll will know where to dig. I could help you with some magnetometer testing if you have the equipment and want to pay me (and take my dog). I've done the grunt work on that kind of geo-physical testing before. A chimp could do it.

I've heard of this book/character but never read it. I was totally lost at first, but I'm getting into the swing of things now. I use to read a lot of sci-fi. I don't know how I missed that one.

Frank, I see no reason why you can't bring your dog. Might be a BIG help to us in avoiding some of the nasty critters said to live there. Since Carter's spending every penny he gets, I think we could also get him to spring for a stipend, especially if you can run a metal detector. That's such a tedious job and it takes concentration and patience. Most of the pros on this job hate having to do it.

But I must ask, why do you say this is fictional? Can't you see I'm SERIOUS about this? Minimalist is kind of giving us a bit of a silly with those female guides he wants to bring along - darnit, he knows all that will happen is we keep wandering off the trail if they join the project. But sheesh, science fiction! I MEAN! How could you accuse me of that?

I have a metal detector! A good one. I need a space suit for Goldie, my dog. So I guess I'll do the grunt work. Is that it? Dang uppity college types!

Hey, you guys need to check up on the literature about this site. It was a mild, semi-tropical setting from all that I have read, except for some of the higher mountains around the valleys, which were snow-capped. Space suits, indeed! How could John Howard Carter have loved, battled, and rescued so many from such perils if he had been hampered with such stuff? Nahh, it's apparently a lot like California's Central Valley. Goldie will be JUST fine.

Now as for the implict suggestion of snobbery - if we're going to do this right, the folk with the academic training and professional field-work experience properly will be in charge and leading the work. There's nothing wrong with running the metal detector; it's just that some people have the patience for it, some don't.

I was on expedition for a deep-water shipwreck a while back, and spent countless hours just tending the video camera. It was really pretty boring. But I could never have done the job of the fellows operating the side-scan sonar towfish or operating the remotely-operated vehicle dropped to the wreck site. Their job was not only "tedium" defined, but actually required that they pay constant, un-ending attention to the display screens. I would have slit my wrists about a day into the work.

So your contribution is NOT minimal nor menial. It is simply suitable.

Good question. I have my doubts, but we can always check with Carter. From what I understand, though, Carter is the kind of guy who likes being completely in chare, and you can see how having the professor along might be an issue.

How about professor Challenger? He accomplished great things in his day.

You, Jane?

Hey, we can't afford any "me, Tarzan - you, Jane" sort of stuff on a serious expedition. Darnit, M, all the fur bearing and baring babes are getting to your testosterone!

NO, Professor Challenger is specifically NOT invited to this dig. We are going to have to deal with enough ego with Carter. Professor Burroughs is not available but has consented to provide his files to us in advance so we can ge a better handle on details of what we might encounter. Challenger is a pretty tough guy and could help in a clinch, but the nasties we can expect are the kinds that live under rocks and crawl out of hidden holes in the ground. Those are not his strength - in fact, I hear he gets creeped out by spiders. Heck, so do I!

So? What's your point?

Tripod is notorious for not allowing hot-linking, Stan. If they have a picture you want, save it on your hard drive and then use a free service like photobucket.com to host your own pictures.

Do you mean I have broken a law, but that laundering the connection
will make it legal? How do they enforce this "not allowing hot-linking?"
Should I delete the pic to keep out of trouble??

And by the way, why did you check the origin of the post?

No, they just do not want to subsidize someone else's bandwidth.

Sites that do not want you to copy their pictures can disable the right-click function if they care that much.

By saving the photo to your hard drive and then uploading it to photobucket or 81X or some other such image hosting site you can then take the new url from the host site and add it as an image wherever you wish.
